What’s the common feature among dramas “Secret Garden,” “The Heirs,” “Descendants of the Sun,” “Guardian,” “The Lonely and Great Good,” and “Mr. Sunshine”? If you come up with a dramatist, You are close to a correct answer. It is Kim Eun Sook, who has penned numerous hits such as the aforementioned titles.
Last week SBS unveiled a firsthand teaser for Kim’s upcoming drama “The King: The Eternal Monarch,” which will be a fantasy drama about two parallel universes of monarchy and democracy. TV viewers are looking forward to the way how she will write the story in a fresh way and how her power of a brush stroke breaks out of the boundaries of standard fantasy romances.
This new drama will feature the male lead Lee Min Ho, the young Korean heartthrob, who returns from his military service. He will play Emperor Lee Gon who tries to close the virtual cross-dimensional gate connecting various worlds together. To be specific, a devil is released into the human world and opens a door into a parallel world. The devil asks if someone lived a better life in the other world. In an effort to protect his loved ones form danger, Lee teams up with a modern day detective to shut the door between the two worlds—monarchy and democracy.
As a perfect ruler, Lee Gon is quiet, sensitive, and compulsive. He has good looks and a calm demeanor. Hating to be touched by others, Lee considers his place the safest place on earth although it revealed a scheme of treason against his father. At some point, he starts to feel like escaping the palace, having no thoughts of marriage or family lineage.
The teaser video starts with Lee Min Ho facing away from the camera, in a stately room. As the scene overlaps and flips, we see a king’s robes intercut with Lee Min Ho giving us blue steel. Lee says in voiceover, “I am Lee Gon, emperor of the Korean empire.”
A blackboard covered in complicated looking equations is seen and the image returns to that stately room. We get a full shot of Lee’s face as the camera zooms in on him. The teaser is closed with the Lee’s statement similar to the initial opening, “My name is Lee Gon.”
“The King: The Eternal Monarch is scheduled to air in SBS’ Friday-Saturday timeslot. Stay tuned for even more teasers and information leading up to “The King: The Eternal Monarch’s premiere this April!
