According to Nielsen Korea, the last episode of tvN’s TV drama “Crash Landing on You” smashed Korean TV ratings, obtaining an average rating of 21.683%. The drama surpassed the previous record set by “Goblin” back in January 2017, whose final achieved a peak rating of 20.5%. The 16-part series reached its climax on cable network tvN last week.
“Crash Landing on You” is a love story of an oddly-matched couple coming from very different backgrounds. Yoon Se Ri, played by Son Ye Jin, is a super rich heiress and a leading fashion businesswoman in South Korea. She is forced to land in North Korea while paragliding due to a sudden gust of wind. She bumps into Lee Jong Hyeok, North Korean military officer, played by Hyun Bin. He does everything to keep her hidden and protect her, falling in love with her. The star-crossed lovers share a tearful reunion when Yoon recovers consciousness from a coma after an dramatic event where she throws herself into the line of fire to save Lee’s life. The latest episode of the drama ended on a suspenseful cliffhanger with a mournful aura. Both Lee and Yoon have tears brimming in their eyes. Lee steels his expression into a mask as he says something serious to the forlorn Yoon.
The lead actors of the drama each picked out their favorite scenes from the drama. Hyun Bin singled out the ending scene from episode 9, where he and Son Ye Jin had to part although they grew on each other.
Hyun Bin stated, “I worked on this drama looking forward to the outcome that “Crash Landing on You” would bring viewers joy. Thank you for pulling for us and showing love, allowing Lee Jong Hyeok, my role in the drama to happily land by your sides.”
Son Ye Jin chose the part in episode 12 where Lee Jong Hyeok and Yoon Se Ri share a conversation over drinks. Getting tipsy and confident, Lee let loose his feelings on Yoon, who was overjoyed by his words that sounded like a proposal. Viewers are captivated by their romantic atmosphere.
Son Ye Jin stated, “My role as Yoon Se Ri made me laugh and cry a lot. I am thankful to have been part of the drama that will take up a very big part of my acting career.”
However, “Crashing Landing on You” also has been under criticism for romanticizing North Korea. In actuality, the conservative Christian Liberty Party lodged a complaint against tvN last January for allegedly violating the National Security Law. They claimed, “In pursuant to the National Security Act, one should not praise or follow any antinational organizations that compromise the existence of South Korea.” In regard to this, the police stated, “We have not officially gotten down to the investigations and are still reviewing that matter.”
Does this drama portray a wholly authentic North Korea? Otherwise, are most settings closer to a fantasy?
“I do not think we should worry about the drama glamorizing North Korea. What we should consider is how this K Drama could influence the North Koreans as it is smuggled into the country. But anything should not be allowed to make people misguided or misled in life, especially with regard to North Korean things.” said a viewer online.
