When it comes to driving, nothing is more important than safety. A pair of compact Kias were officially recognized by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in regard to vehicle safety. Kia’s iconic urban passenger vehicle and stylish compact crossover earned the coveted 2018 IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus Accolade. The 2018 Soul and 2018 Sportage were the winners.

To qualify for TSP+, a vehicle must earn good ratings in all five crashworthiness tests: small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side impact, roof strength, and head restraints. The vehicle must also be equipped with available front crash prevention technology that’s rated either advanced or superior by the institute, and acceptable or good headlights.

IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus Accolade makes Kia keep on smiling.

“Kia’s world-class lineup continues to earn quality, reliability and safety awards at an increasing rate and these IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus ratings for the Soul and the Sportage reflect Kia’s continuous improvement and effort to improve all aspects of safety,” said Orth Hedrick, vice president, product planning, KMA.

As for the Soul, the automaker’s top-selling vehicle, it has been a Top Safety Pick nearly every model year since it first rolled off the assembly line in 2010, while for the Sportage this is its first ever Top Safety Pick+ award. This year’s IIHS Accolade is attributed to the fact that 2018 Kia Souls are equipped with high-intensity discharge(HID) headlights—offered on the Primo Lit package—and 2018 Kia Sportages built after June 2017 are equipped with newly acceptable-rated HID headlights that are standard on the SX Turbo trim.

To scrutinize those two award-winning vehicles, the Soul has ranked #1 in the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS) in its category for three consecutive years. The 2018 model focuses on expanding the availability of UVO3 across the model range, adding the innovative infotainment system to the Base Convenience Package as well as to Soul Plus as standard equipment. The new Soul Plus Primo “Lit” Package includes HID headlights and LED positioning lights to enhance Soul’s on-road presence.

The Sportage offers advanced technology and greater options across three trim levels—LX, EX, and SX—in the popular subcompact utility segment. A new technology package, previously available starting at EX trim, is available at the LX level, delivering Blind Spot Detection, a Lane Departure Warning System, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Now the Soul and Sportage join four other Kia vehicles that have received the TSP+ rating from IIHS: Forte, Optima, Cadenza, and Sorento. Kia’s wheel of fortune keeps on rolling.
