Annual Chrysanthemum Festival Returns with More Fun

The annual chrysanthemum festival kicked off in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province last week and runs until early next month.

Artworks made out of chrysanthemums, including a model of the Earth and a huge pair of hands cradling the Earth, are displayed at the entrance of the festival venue.

Some 9,500 artworks featuring chrysanthemums are on display this year. They include characters from animated films and various exhibitions relating to Changwon. The intricately designed displays promote the city, featuring aspects of its culture and history.

Among them, a love-themed zone is the most popular spot. Many families and couples take pictures in a chrysanthemum tunnel in the zone.

As part of this year’s festival a wedding photo contest will be held. Anyone planning to get married soon, or brides- or grooms-to-be can simply submit their loveliest photos and the winning couple will get a prize.

The highlight of the festival is a single stem containing some 1,520 buds, which breaks the festival’s own Guinness World Record for the number of flowers blooming from a single stem.

Placed on a 4-m-tall observatory at the center of the venue, it can be seen from anywhere in the festival venue.

The festival, which is marking its 17th year, lasts until Nov. 8. Shuttle buses are available nearby to take visitors to the site.

Some 6,000 artworks made from chrysanthemums decorate the surrounding streets during the festival. Visitors can enjoy various activities and performances, including fireworks, which will light up the night sky on Nov. 3.

The festival attracted 1.37 million visitors last year.
