Most Young People Want Small Weddings, But…

Eight out of 10 single young men and women want a small wedding but only five percent actually manage to get what they want, a poll suggests.

The Korea Consumer Agency polled 1,000 single men and women and 1,000 married men and women in August.

In the unmarried group, 79,6 percent said they want a small wedding, but only 5.4 percent amongst the married respondents said they had one. Nine out of 10 unmarried respondents said they want to invite only their families and close friends, but in reality 56.4 percent of married respondents managed to limit their guest list.

Asked what would be the ideal number of guests to their wedding, 45.3 percent of unmarried respondents replied fewer than 100. But only 7.4 percent of married respondents kept numbers down, while 29.6 percent had 200 to 300 guests and 19.4 percent over 400.

The vast majority or 94.6 percent agreed there are many problems with Korea’s wedding culture. The most-cited were excessive gifts and money exchanged between families and for the bride and the groom, and the general culture that puts too much importance on saving face.
